[edit] Introduction

Hi there!

Thanks for helping to edit the TradGirl wiki. Your contribution is truly appreciated. And with the niceties out of the way ;-), let me strongly encourage you to use the following conventions when editing TradGirl wiki pages. The wiki software goes a long way in helping us achieve a consistent look and feel, but beyond that, there are a few simple things that you can do to help maintain consistency.

[edit] Prerequisites

You'll want to become familiar with MediaWiki editing markup. The main page is here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing . Read it and learn it. The editing guide is your friend.

[edit] TradGirl capitalization

TradGirl is TradGirl. No tradgirls, Tradgirls, or tradGirls please.

[edit] Simple page names

When creating new pages, try to keep it simple. For example, "Aconcagua" is good, but "Aconcagua, Argentina" is not. If you want to show that Aconcagua is in Argentina, you can use the power of categories, and the right thing will automatically happen.

[edit] Categorization is your friend

Each page should belong to at least one category, and preferably, as many categories as is apt. For example, a trip report about the Cayman Brac might belong to both the Trip Report category as well as the Cayman Brac category. Pictures can belong to categories too! For more information on categories, please see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Category. For a list of all the categories on the TradGirl wiki, please see http://wiki.tradgirl.com/Special:Categories

I like hierarchy. So for example, all pages related to Aconcagua would belong to the Aconcagua category. That category might belong to the Argentina category, and Argentina might belong to the Category:Climbing Areas category.

[edit] Dealing with quotations

The easiest way to indicate quoted text is to use indentation. The magic that does this is a colon (:) at the beginning of the line. Use more colons to indicate deeper levels of quotation.

[edit] Images and Captions

Getting captions under images is a bit tricky, but here is the way to do it:

The "right" keyword puts the image on the right hand side of the page. To get an image on the left, just use "left" instead. For the full documentation, please see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Images_and_other_uploaded_files

[edit] Keeping Up

I like to subscribe to the RSS feed presented at Special:Recentchanges. It lets me keep a global view on what's going on, with the side benefit of watching to see if anyone is sneaking spam in here somehow. For now, the traffic isn't too onerous, but if it gets to be too much, I may have to start subscribing to the feeds of individual sections.
